Is That a Crater?

I find the Sahara a fascinating place to explore with Google Earth, and in doing so I stumbled upon something which resembles an impact crater.

Crater or not?

To avoid an obvious “d’oh!”-moment, I checked PASSC Earth Impact Database and it was not listed there. Unfortunately the database does not list “unconfirmed structures”, but an overlay for Google Earth of IFSG Suspected Earth Impact Sites exists. However, the mystery structure is not listed there either.

The structure (you can also view a Google Earth screen capture) resides in Algeria, at about 22 deg 48' 50.77" N 9 deg 29' 08.92" E, and has a diameter of about 2.8 km.

I’m not a geologist, and I’d like to know if that is a crater, an old caldera, or something else. If you know any geologists, please pass this article to them!

Update: An update on the mystery structure.
