For Those About the Rock, We Salute You

Some time ago while playing with Google Earth I found an odd structure, which I suspected might be an impact crater. Since impact craters are not so terribly common, and since I can barely distinguish caldera from caldeirada, I wanted a professional opinion from someone well versed with rocks, i.e. a geologist.

After some surfing I found Mr. Rowan’s blog Highly Allochtonous. I sent Mr. Rowan a mail asking for help, and in a few days the strange structure was being analyzed into submission by a group of people who sure know their rock.

In a nutshell (I’m still parsing the comments): it seems not to be an impact crater. Was I disappointed! But it seems to have given an interesting little puzzle for the geologists, so I’m happy.

Thanks to all who took the time to think about it!

Update: It’s now “officially” not an impact crater. Read the comments too!
