A Collection of Random Interesting Wiki Pages

Well, ’nuff said. I read Wikipedia a lot and here are some interesting pages:

Ablation Cascade

Ablation cascade, an explosive destruction of a satellite in orbit creates debris, which destroys other satellites, causing an autocatalytic effect, eventually destroying all satellites in orbit.

Remember what Jeff Goldblum’s character said in ID4, something like “Communications disruption can mean only one thing – invasion”? It could also mean an ablation cascade is in full effect.

Ternary Logic

Ordinary Boolean logic is crisp, black and white, one or zero, true of false, in other words 2-valued (or bivalent). There exists also ternary logic, in which there is not just true and false – but true, false and unknown.

With ternary logic you can for example build interesting computers or answer the question whether a dog has the Buddha nature.

Al-Khwarizmi

Working in the House of Wisdom during the Islamic Golden Age, Al-Khwarizmi was the 9th century Persian scientist who gave the name for the term “algorithm“.

Of all the ancient scientists, many people know Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei and Archimedes etc., but Al-Khwarizmi is not so well known. Nevertheless, he was a pretty smart guy – among other things, his writings laid the foundations for modern algebra.

I know who Al-Khwarizmi was and that his name
accidentaly was translated to algorithm when his texts were translated to Latin or Greek or whatever those fancy pants scientists used to speak back then.

“Operor non papa mihi vos puella, vel ego mos papa vos sic ferreus ut vos mos nunquam alieno is!” –Imperator Vader

Anything said in Latin just looks good.

Hi, I like your blog, but would you please consider switching to a full and not partial RSS-feed.

Beans, sure thing – I’ve turned on full feed now. Hope you keep on reading :)
