I’ll cut the introduction short. If you have a CD image file in .uif format (MagicISO proprietary Universal Image Format) and are under Linux, you probably by now are painfully aware of your problem and are interested on just the solution without further ceremonies.

If a kernel call is made but nobody is listening, does it make a sound?
The BeOS kernel kit (kernel/OS.h) has the following function:
int32 is_computer_on();
Returns 1 if the computer is on. If the computer isn’t on, the value returned by this function is undefined.
Although funny, it’s also actually perfectly logical! For technically interesting and/or nostalgic moments, have a look at the Be Book.

I find it fascinating that there is a huge machine up there, orbiting the Earth, with people living inside it. It’s a tiny artificial world where living things survive through their own intellect and hard work in an environment where, from the point of view of nature, they are not meant to be at all and where they would otherwise be unable to survive.

Hurraa, Ter�sbetoni! Kuuntelin Ylen sivuilta Suomen euroviisuedustuksesta kilpailleiden artistien kappaleet. Varsinaisen viisubiisin valinta oli t�ysin oikea – Ter�sbetoni erottui edukseen ja oli aivan menev� biisi muutenkin kaikessa sankarihevim�isyydess��n. Lis�ksi sekaan oli saatu pyrotekniikkaa, joka (kuten kaikki tiet��) oli Lordin menestyksen vaiettu salaisuus. Onneksemme ruotsalaiset eiv�t ole tajunneet varustaa Carolaa tultasy�ksev�ll� kirveell� (ehk�p� juuri t�m�n takia Carola ei edes p��ssyt mukaan finaaliin).

A CAPTCHA is an automated test which is used to separate computers from humans. It is created in such a way that for humans it is easy, but for computers as difficult as possible. For example, given an image with distorted text, a human can easily read the presented word, but computers will have difficulties (the amount of difficulties depends on how the image is distorted).
One use for CAPTCHAs is to prevent spamming with the idea that anything automated (such as mass-spamming computers) won’t pass the puzzle, and therefore will not be able to inject their trash-messages into a service. However, CAPTCHAs don’t work so well in practice anymore.
